July 21-27: Last contest week for #PTXFanArtBook

This week of contests will work much like Bandwagon Week: we’ll be putting as much art in the PTX Fan Art Book as qualifies with 15+ votes, as long as each member of Pentatonix gets the same number of art pieces. We hope this will be our biggest contest week ever!

Artists who have not yet won a contest–we call them darkhorses–have their art added at higher priority. To enter, simply tweet or quote your art, one image per tweet, and mention @PTX_FanArt.

One thing that’s different this week: unlike previous weeks, we now welcome art that members of Pentatonix have seen! If you have some art that someone in Pentatonix has seen and loves, enter it this week, and it will run alongside undiscovered art.

Here’s the schedule:

  • July 21: #FanArtFriday. Enter your art of at least three members of Pentatonix together, or your rendition of the PTX logo. All entries that get 15+ votes join the book, with no limits.
  • July 22: #AviSaturday. The Art Book for Avi is not taking new content, but the PTX Fan Art Book is. If you’ve gotten your art in Avi’s book but not in the PTX book yet, this is a good time to enter.
  • July 23: #ScottSunday. This day tends to run short on entries compared to other contest days, so please enter your Scott Hoying fan art!
  • July 24: #MitchMonday. We already have many entries for this day, but if you haven’t won any of our contests yet, your art’s chances are good today. Please enter!
  • July 25: #SuperfruitTuesday! There’s been a lot of great @SUP3RFRUIT fan art lately, and we want it to be part of the PTX Fan Art Book, too. All entries that get 15+ votes this #SuperfruitTuesday join the book, with no limits.
  • July 26: #KevinWednesday. Kevin tends to get fewer entries than some other members, so please draw Kevin and enter your art of him!
  • July 27:#KirstieThursday. We already have many Kirstin entries, but if you haven’t won any of our contests yet, your chances are good today. Please enter!

Our greatest need is for art of Scott and Kevin; they tend to have the fewest works of art entered. So please, draw Scott or Kevin, and if you know someone who’s made art of Scott or Kevin, invite them to enter their art!

Bandwagon Week, June 30 – July 6

We’ll begin funding the book for Pentatonix in July, and it will be printed at the end of July. So we’re in our last contest weeks for the book. On Bandwagon Week, we aim to add a balanced crop of many artists’ work to the book: the more, the merrier!

How to Enter

Enter as you would for a normal contest: any time from now until voting opens on contest day, tweet your art & mention @PTX_FanArt. Traditional, digital, and photo edit art will all run together, without distinction of categories. Otherwise, rules will be like normal contest rules, except that we’ll be accepting as many works of art as we can as long as each member gets the same amount. We’d especially like to point out that you’re welcome to re-enter any art of yours that hasn’t yet won.

You are welcome to enter art that depicts more than one member of Pentatonix. If you do, we will decide which member’s day it runs on, in an effort to balance individual and group shots member for member.

How Winners are Determined

#FanArtFriday on June 30 is a simple approval event: all entries that get at least 10 votes join the #PTXFanArtBook. We’ll take as many as come.

The individual members’ contest days, July 1 through 6, have only one limit to how many entries join the book: the number of qualifying entries in whoever’s contest day has the fewest. An entry for a member’s day must earn at least 20 votes to count as a qualifying entry. (This is up from #FanArtFriday’s 10-vote requirement.)

For example, let’s suppose we get Bandwagon Week entry counts based on the averages from our last three general contest weeks. That would look like this:

    #AviSaturday: 21 entries
    #ScottSunday: 7 entries
    #MitchMonday: 10 entries
 #KevinWednesday: 7 entries
#KirstieThursday: 13 entries

In this example, the fewest entries in any of these contest days is 7, so 7 entries from each contest day would be added to the art book for Pentatonix. Once the week is complete, each contest day’s entries join the gallery and book with the following priority:

  1. Top-voted entry overall
  2. Darkhorse entries, top-voted first, 1 entry per artist. For this contest’s purposes, a darkhorse is anyone who hasn’t won a contest before Bandwagon Week started.
  3. Champion entries, top-voted first, 1 entry per artist.
  4. Additional entries from artists who already have an entry accepted for that day.
  • In the event of a tie (e.g. 2 entries from darkhorse artists on the same contest day that get the same number of votes), priority goes to whichever work of art was entered earlier.
  • As usual, #AviSaturday will also serve as an approval event for the art book for Avi: every work of art that gets at least 28 votes will join Avi’s book. #DragonTuesday is exclusive to Avi’s book; all dragon art that gets at least 14 votes will join Avi’s book.
  • How to Help Bandwagon Week Succeed
  • We happily welcome entries for all our contest days, as many as care to enter, so enter any of your art that you’d love to have Pentatonix see. Our records of past entries show that Kevin and Scott tend to get the fewest entries. So if you want to give your art and your friends’ art the best possible chance of joining the book, draw Kevin or Scott, or both! You can also help by sharing your favorite photos and videos of Kevin or Scott, and inviting your artist friends to enter Kevin or Scott art.

In case you’d like some help learning to draw them:

Updated Event Timeline

We’ve set a plan to have the book for Pentatonix and the book especially for Avi into their hands at the concert in Allentown, PA on September 2, 2017. Below is our schedule of events and book preparation.

Art approval events

  • June 23-29: Coloring contest WeekFollow this link to view coloring contest rules and download the coloring pages.
  • June 30-July 6: Bandwagon Week. This week, we’ll add to the book the largest crop of art that we can balance member-for-member. The only limit is whichever member’s voting day has the fewest approved entries.
  • July 7-13: Favorites Week. This week we’ll only be accepting entries that show the members’ favorite people or things. Depicting the members themselves is optional.
  • July 14-20: Avi’s Week. No content gathering events for PTX book this week. Last #AviSaturday & #DragonTuesday for Avi’s book. Possible other events TBA.
  • July 21-27: Last full week of events for the book for PTX.
  • July 28: Final #FanArtFriday. Last event to gather content for this PTX book. Art showing 3 or more members of Pentatonix together may enter. All entries with 15+ votes will join the PTX Fan Art Book.
  • July 29: Campaign Day. A few nominated art pieces will campaign to join the PTX Fan Art Book. 50+ votes gets them in.

Book funding, printing, and delivery

  • July 1-19: Fundraiser for Avi’s book. We’ll start showing early PDF drafts of Avi’s book on our sit, and we’ll raise money to print and ship 3 hardcover books: one for Avi, one for his parents, and one for Annie Stoll, who designed his album cover. We’ll be working with Avi’s Peeps to print it, which should save us some money compared to our formerly estimated $220. We’ll update this post when we have a newer estimate.
  • July 20: Deadline for revisions to Avi’s book. We place the print order on July 21. [Update: This was our initial goal. We are running behind our stated schedule, but still have a few weeks’ wiggle room to get this printed in time.]
  • July 21-Aug 3: Fundraiser for PTX book. We need to raise funds to print and ship 5 hardcover books: one for each member of Pentatonix. We will show PDF drafts of the PTX book on our site. With Avi’s Peeps‘ help, we anticipate needing less funding than our formerly estimated $300; we’ll update this post when we have a newer estimate. [Update: We will begin fundraising for the PTX book after the PDF for the Art Book for Avi is finalized.]
  • August 3: Deadline for revisions to book for PTX. We place the print order on August 4.
  • September 2: Pentatonix concert in Allentown, PA. Viola Love (@ptxviola) is attending a private performance, and will hand-deliver a copy of the PTX book to each member of Pentatonix, and also a copy of Avi’s book to Avi.

Writing Week, June 9-15

From June 9 through 15, we’ll be taking a brief break from contests for Writing Week! We’ll focus on preparing the book for Pentatonix and the book for Avi with the written words they need.  Here’s what you can expect:

  • We’ll be discussing possible book and chapter titles on Twitter. You can participate by following @PTX_FanArt and replying with suggestions, taking polls, etc.
  • We’ll be making the rounds, asking artists with entries approved for the books to provide titles for their art, and short messages (1 to 2 tweets long) to accompany them.
  • This isn’t for the books, but just for fun, we’ll make a new blog post every day of Writing Week! Tweet us with questions about our projects, or with Pentatonix- and art-related topics you’re interested in reading about.
  • We’ll also be using this time to work on circulating campaigns that still need to reach 100 votes.
  • #AviSaturday and #DragonTuesday art approval events will happen this week as usual.

Please bear in mind the following events coming up after Writing Week:

  1. June 16-22: Normal art contest week. You may enter your art any time before contest day, starting now.
  2. June 23-29: Coloring Contest Week. You can download the coloring pages and start coloring now.

[Editor’s note: We formerly talked about soliciting various forms of writing for the book, up to a page in length. However, we have since decided against actively pursuing this. If anyone wishes to include longer writing in the book, this is possible, if it meets exacting standards for PTX-appropriateness and completes a successful campaign. More details on request.]

Timeline to book delivery

[Editor’s note: To minimize risk, we’ve changed our plans for Writing Week.]

We’ve set a plan to have the book for Pentatonix and the book especially for Avi into their hands at the concert in Allentown, PA on September 2, 2017. Here’s what we have scheduled so far, up to that moment:

  • June 2-8: Normal art contest week. Photo edit art is now welcome, to compete in its own category. More info on winner selection here.
  • June 9-15: Writing week. For each work of art that has won a contest or campaign, the artist may give the art a title and include a brief message, about a tweet’s length. We’ll be focusing on updating the gallery and book plans with these messages during Writing Week.
  • June 16-22: Normal art contest week. Same rules as June 2-8, unless we find a need to revise them.
  • June 23-29: Coloring contest weekFollow this link to view coloring contest rules and download the coloring pages.
  • July 1-19: Fundraiser for Avi’s book. We need to raise an estimated $220 in 2 weeks, to print and ship 3 hardcover books: one for Avi, one for his parents, and one for Annie Stoll, who designed his album cover. We will start to show early PDF drafts of Avi’s book on our site.
  • July 15 and 18: Last #AviSaturday and #DragonTuesday to make it to Avi’s book. (#AviSaturday will continue after this, but will not be included in this book.)
  • July 20: Deadline for revisions to Avi’s book. We place the print order on July 21.
  • July 21-Aug 3: Fundraiser for PTX book. We need to raise an estimated $300 in 2 weeks, to print and ship 5 hardcover books: one for each member of Pentatonix. We will show PDF drafts of the PTX book on our site.
  • July 28: Final #FanArtFriday. Last event to provide content for this PTX book.

#MitchMonday winner: Jen (@jensucks)

Mitch - jensucks
Give Jen’s art some love on Instagram and Twitter.

This is Jen’s second #MitchMonday win in a row. She also won the recent #ScottSunday. While we love her work, we believe our gallery would benefit from featuring a greater variety of artists. Her repeat wins have prompted us to add the following to our contest rules:

Each artist may win a particular contest no more than once per month.

By this rule, both of Jen’s #MitchMonday wins would still be valid, since one was in April and one in May. But this will open up the rest of May to run #MitchMonday entries that won’t be curb-stomped by Jen’s legendary Mitch-drawing prowess.
